Mrs. Wigglebum’s Love Potion
Mrs. Wigglebum’s Love Potion

Introduction

Are you in “love?” Only the potion can tell!

Objectives

To create a “potion” that has a chemical reaction

Materials

  •  Clear plastic cup (eight ounce)
  •  Vinegar
  •  Baking soda
  •  Food coloring (optional)
  •  Dishwashing liquid (optional)
  •  Tablespoon (does not have to be exact)
  •  Wooden craft stick (or something for stirring)

Procedure

Fill the cup half full of vinegar. Put two drops of food coloring in the vinegar and a squirt of dishwashing liquid. Stir with the craft stick. Put a tablespoon of baking soda in the vinegar mixture. Watch out!

Conclusion

The baking soda reacts with the vinegar to produce carbon dioxide gas. Baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. This is a chemical reaction because a new substance (carbon dioxide) is produced. The fizzing and bubbling are a result of the gas being released.
